About   the   picture

After the fires, it took days for the land to cool and the smouldering ashes to settle. I drove around the areas worst hit, trying to understand. So much life lost. The human tragedy was one thing, but it was the animals that got to me most. Wallabies, kangaroos, wombats; burnt to a crisp, lips melted, eyeballs charcoaled, moulded into the ground where they fell.

The stench of soot and burnt flesh was overwhelming. And that which was not charred, the sweet smell of rot was beginning to set in. A land devastated by fire. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. From this death, new growth will arise. Life goes on. The cycle continues.
