One secret to a peaceful sleep – White Noise

Rain GifIn our modern world, a good nights sleep can be harder and harder to achieve. Yet it is a fundamental part of our mental and physical health. Without it, we are doomed.

One of the key complaints I hear from people who are suffering with sleep issues is that they are constantly woken by noise outside. As I’m sure you can appreciate, this is very relevant to those who work night shifts and need to sleep during the day. With all the hustle and bustle outside, is it any wonder it’s hard to get a quality sleep.

For this kind of sleep problem, there is one very effective secret solution and, like many cases, mother nature has been showing us the way all along. The answer is rain. More specifically, the sound of rain.

Have you ever wondered why it is that we feel more relaxed when it is raining? The reason is that rain creates a naturally occurring  sound called ‘white noise’. White noise is a sound that randomly hits all (or many) of the frequencies we can hear. By doing this, it doesn’t so much block other sounds, but rather masks them. Any other sound that is of the same volume or less, will become an incoherent part of the white noise.

Now here’s the best part. If the white noise is at a constant rate and volume, your brain will become numb to it after a few minutes. It will cancel it out and take with it, all the other sounds that have become part of the white noise. To your brain, this is as good as silence allowing you to get a good nights sleep.

“But it doesn’t rain all the time” I hear you cry. This is where the magic of modern technology comes to the rescue. There are a number of web sites, CD’s and apps that generate the sound of rain or pure white noise for you. My personal favourite is http://mynoise.net you can listen to it from the web site for free and make a donation if you like it or you can purchase the app. I personally use the app by placing my phone next to the bed and remembering to put it in airplane mode so that I’m not soaking up all those nasty phone emissions. There are many soundscapes to choose from, but I find the various rain ones to be the most soothing and effective. Experiment and find what is best for you.

Have a brilliant day and a most peaceful sleep 🙂
